Travelday - Pompeii

Following our morning driving the Amalfi Coast but before heading up to Rome,
we stopped at Pompeii for a look around.

  1. Such a neat place to visit! And now that I've seen the Doctor Who Pompeii episode, so thrilling too!

Did you stop at Herculaneum as well? I was even more fascinated by that place, if that's possible.

    2. Drat it, I had a nice long reply typed up and Blogger froze and lost it all!

Short version is that we were in quite a rush at this stage so didn't see much at all. We plan to go back to explore Italy south of Rome in more depth one day ... I hear that the museums in Naples have some pretty cool stuff in them too.

  3. Amazing! I nearly minored in archaeology in uni (ended doing classics instead) and Pompeii is definitely on my list of places to visit!

    1. I hate to admit it but neither of us were overwhelmed by Pompeii ... possibly not helped by the fact that we were distracted with a money transfer/nothing on our travel card issue that we realised existed when we tried to get out cash to pay for our entrance fee ...

I can see how it would be very interesting for an archaeologist, particularly the ones who were actually working there initially, but to the untrained eye most of it was basically building rubble. That said, we both want to go back and have a proper look around Herculaneum, the museums in Naples and possibly even Pompeii again (this time with money and a map!).

  4. Pompeii looks absolutely incredible. Mother-in-law just returned from a European vacation and said Pompeii was the most amazing experience she has ever had. Really MUST get there one day. Loving reading your holiday journal.

    1. Thanks Saskia, it's taken a long time to get through all of it (not helped by last year's ups and downs that saw very little blogging happening at times). I'm going to be sorry when I get to the end but then I have a few other travel related things in the back of my mind that I don't really want to start on until this is finished so it will be good at the same time.

I read so many good things about Pompeii before we left and so many people since have commented on how much they loved it that I think we are going to have to give it a second chance if/when we end up back in the region.
